Interviewer: Kimia Davoodi
Interviewee: Mauj Yousif
My name is Mauj Yousif. I am a third year honours Life Sciences student at Mcmaster University. I have been involved with CVA since September 2015. I am currently volunteering at the YMCA Newcomer Centre.
The fact that CVA has allowed me act as a homework help volunteer with youth immigrants has impacted me personally. It has taught me not to assume that individuals possess the same knowledge that I did when I was their age. When I first started helping the youth with homework, I would speak in the manner I usually do to explain concepts or I help the students solve problems without showing every single step involved. I realized that many of the youth did not follow my thought process, now I use simple terms and thoroughly explain how questions should be answered.
One highlight I had during my volunteer experience occurred this Thursday (Feb, 11). One of the youth asked me for homework help, she did not have a test the next day nor did she want me to help her with an assignment that would be graded. She simply wanted to understand the content, I was very glad to see that she wanted to develop her knowledge.
